Sage is an herb used in many ways for spiritual healing, cleansing and protective practices, or can simply be burned to enjoy the relaxing aroma. Smudging is a way of using the smoke from sage bundles or incense to “cleanse” the body, dwelling or object, making way for positive influences. Some also practice smudging as a blessing for new babies and family unions. Sage is also used in Sweat lodges for the participants to rub on their bodies during the sweat.

A simple way to smudge is to direct the smoke from the incense with your hands or a feather over the person or thing you wish to smudge. For purifying a house, offer the smoke to the four directions outside the house. Then go throughout the dwelling, penetrating the smoke in every room. Smudging is best done with care and reverence for the person, object or dwelling that is being offered purification, and also with respect, honor and thanksgiving to the plants from which the incense is made.

Keep burning incense away from flammable materials and out of the reach of children. Never leave burning incense unattended. Make sure ashes fall on a fireproof surface. Always use incense in a ventilated area.
